In the spirit of the Olympics and my favorite red head ever I've decided to blog about Shaun White! Tonight, February 17, 2010, Shaun has won his first gold medal of the Vancouver 2010 Olympics in the half-pipe event.
What has recently hit headlines is the news of his recently built person half-pipe in Silverton, Colorado. It is located in the middle of the mountains, so seclusive it is only accessible by helicopter. Shaun White gives props to his sponsor Red Bull for creating the pipe of his dreams in order to create tricks he never imagined possible. "I have had all these tricks in my mind I've wanted to try. I just needed a place to figure them out." Shaun White explains in his website that without Project-X this wouldn't be possible.
According to Fourth Place Medal, the half-pipe spans 550 feet and lays upon a 12,000 foot mountain. The construction of the pipe required 30 heli-bomb dropped avalanches" and "8,000 lbs of steel.

I thought that was a really cool video. I wonder if that half pipe that he was using is the same sized one in the Olympics. If it is bigger than I'm sure it would have given him the opportunity to preform awesome tricks because he would be able to gather more speed.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand I think the costs associated with giving one man his own private half pipe accessed only by helicopter is a little ridiculous. Come on RedBull. People are starving and we are giving Shawn White a half pipe?

I agree that Shawn White is an amazing athlete. I love keeping up with him in the Olympics and was excited when he won gold. The video of White's half pipe is really cool, he's so lucky to have the opportunity to practice in the middle of the mountains on his very own half pipe. I also agree with Max, that although the half pipe is really cool, the money can be used for a better cause.
